Cookie Policy

Which cookies and local storage items Shifo uses, and why.

Shifo uses a small number of cookies and browser storage items to make the service work. This page describes each item, why it exists, and how long it stays on your device.

What we use

Shifo is a logged-in web application that authenticates with a bearer token instead of a session cookie. As a result, we rely on localStorage for most stored values rather than traditional cookies. Both are covered by the same rules under Dutch and EU privacy law.

Essential items (always active)

These items are required for Shifo to function. Without them you cannot log in or use the service.

  • shifo_token — stores your authentication token after you log in. Removed when you log out.
  • Locale preference — remembers whether you want the interface in Dutch or English.
  • Theme preference — remembers whether you chose light or dark mode.
  • shifo_cookie_consent — remembers whether you accepted or rejected optional cookies, so we don't show the banner again.
  • Device token (shared tablets only) — when an organization registers a tablet for the time clock, a long-lived device token is stored on that device so staff can clock in by PIN without logging in.

Optional items (only with your consent)

Shifo does not currently use analytics, marketing, or tracking cookies by default. If we add any in the future, they will be loaded only after you click "Accept" in the cookie banner, and this page will be updated to list them.

Third-party items

  • Stripe — if you open the billing section, Stripe sets its own cookies to protect against fraud. See Stripe's cookie policy for details.
  • Vercel — our hosting provider may set a short-lived cookie for load balancing and security. No personal data is collected.

Managing your choices

You can change your cookie choice at any time by clearing the shifo_cookie_consent entry from your browser's storage. The banner will reappear on your next visit.

You can also delete all Shifo cookies and localStorage entries via your browser's site settings. Note that doing so will log you out.
